Iraq is in danger of being destroyed by paranoia. The leaders are judging people by whether they are Kurds, Shia, or Sunni. They believe that if you are not one of us, then you are our enemy, because you can NEVER trust a ___________.
It does not matter what you put in the blank. The truth is that about 5% of the population IN ANY GROUP are completely untrustworthy because all their choices are completely selfish.
ALL COUNTRIES HAVE MINORITY POPULATIONS. These minority populations are just as patriotic as the majority populations. The only way you can make a minority population rebellious, is to treat the minority population as if they were all untrustworthy criminals.
Young adult males are especially vulnerable to charismatic leaders who tell them that they are being mistreated and should rebel. But if these young adult males were being treated with respect by the majority, then they would just live productive, non rebellious lives.
YOU CAN NOT STOP A REBELLION WITH VIOLENCE. You can only stop a rebellion by LISTENING to the complaints of the rebels and then fixing the cause of the reasonable complaints.
ALL COUNTRIES need a reconciliation process. RECONCILIATION WORKS!
BTW, it is incredibly STUPID to put YOUR FRIENDS, and only your friends, in charge of your ARMY. Armies are not as easy to control as people think. You do not just give orders and get the orders obeyed. THIS IS ESPECIALLY TRUE WHEN PEOPLE ARE SHOOTING AT THE ARMY.
But, unfortunately, if you are oppressing minorities, you will not take my advice. This is because YOUR MIND IS NOT FLEXIBLE ENOUGH TO SEE THAT WOMEN AND MINORITIES ARE AN IMPORTANT PART OF YOUR COUNTRY AND SHOULD BE TREATED WITH RESPECT.
