BETWEEN A ROCK AND A HARD PLACE*

Americans are so addicted to money that they can not spare any taxes to help the poor, the disabled, the sick, the children. A new iPod is more important than a poor student's college education.

How did we get to be so selfish?

I watch the poor and disenfranchised of Northern Africa risk death for themselves and their families to have democracy, because they believe that democracy will bring them the jobs and education they want for themselves and their children.

I watch us refuse to even help our own.

How did we get to be so selfish?

I do believe that the people who want democracy and who face gunfire in the streets, should come up with another way to protest. Having a "sick day" can be very effective if enough people join in. Be sure to keep something around to make you really sick, so you do not become the example.

People who work for dictators can not refuse to obey orders. But no one says that you have to intelligently obey orders. Modern systems are complex and it is easy to delay implementation of such a system.

Unfortunately, I do not know how to cure selfishness.

*A saying which means that there are no easy answers to the problem we face.
